When you are focusing and setting up your goals there are two primary levels of success. Achievement based and mastery success. Most people focus on the achievement based success and have never even though of mastery or considered it.

Achievement Based Success

Achievement success is typically external. It is when you are focused on accomplishing a goal that is usually, but not always external or out of your true control. Some of these successes are things like:

  • Win first place at a competition
  • Win a football game
  • Earn $100,000 in 6 months

Although there is nothing wrong with achievement goals or success, it will limit you to some degree compared to striving mastery success. For example, if you strive to win first place in a competition, and you lose, you may feel sad, depressed, or mentally down. However, if you win first place, you could be in a state of euphoria where you are overly happy, too confident, or to the point of being mean and cocky.

Mastery Success

Mastery success brings a whole new level to achievement, goals, or accomplishments. Mastery success is usually internal and focused specifically on you improving your inner-self. Comparing to previous examples, lets see how we can transform them into mastery success…

  • Getting proper footwork and timing for my competition
  • Being able to do a mile sprints in under 7 minutes
  • Build content for my business and create value for people

The great thing about mastery success is that you are in control of everything. You have the power to attain it and achieve it and it is always within your reach if you properly setup your goals and targets. If you are working to increase your running speed, you can practice and work at it through proper training. Then when you want achieve something external such as winning a competition, it will come much easier for you.

Final Thoughts:

Focus on a higher level on mastery goals and success types. If you focus too much on achievement things, you may not achieve many of the things you strive for, whereas mastery goals are much more attainable, psychologically healthier, and have a better result when attained.
